Tomorrow, May 2, 2017, CalTrans employees will be on campus to meet with civil engineering students to discuss internship opportunities. The meeting will be held in IT 160 at noon and free lunch will be provided.
When you think of CalTrans, you may think Transportation Engineering, but they also employ a significant number of structural engineers. CalTrans' Structure Design Offices are responsible for a wide range of tasks including preparation of plans and specifications for highway bridges and structures and earth retaining structures. Additional information about this department is available here.
There are distinct differences between working for public agencies like CalTrans compared to working for a private firm. Some of these differences may include varying levels of salary, benefits, job security, regularity of hours, work-life balance, and career mobility. Therefore, even if you are not currently looking for an internship, I encourage you to attend tomorrow's presentation to get more information about what its like to work at CalTrans to help you decide if the public sector is a good fit for you.
